• Large and complex particle accelerators such as colliders in particle physics (e.g. the LHC at CERN), free electron lasers and synchrotron light sources for the study of condensed matter physics.
• Smaller particle accelerators used in a wide variety of applications, including particle therapy for oncological purposes, and radioisotope production for medical diagnostics.
