We start with the bits and pieces, but we are not done until electrons come out at the end…
Currently, at team from RI on site at the Canadian Light Source (CLS) in Canada, where they are working hand in hand with the local staff to install a new linear accelerator (linac) for Canada’s synchrotron light source. Together, they are getting closer to having a fully operational machine day by day.
Since the new machine is so different from the old one, many of the systems previously used need to be updated or redesigned entirely. To ensure a smooth transition, all this is done in close collaboration between our team and the CLS Controls and Instrumentation department. The staff who will use this system when the machine is up and running are also involved with this process, including accelerator physicists, radio frequency and high voltage technicians, and operators.
Upgrading the linear accelerator (linac) is a major project that is preparing CLS for the future. In just six months, the existing linac is removed and replaced with our new one that will improve the efficiency and reliability of the light beam.
