At CERN in Geneva, work is at full swing for HiLumiLHC, the successor the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), that aims to achieve luminosities a factor of five larger than previously. And as you can imagine, we at RI Research Instruments are delighted to contribute to this next generation particle accelerator by supplying what’s called crab cavities.
Particles in the LHC are accelerated in radiofrequency cavities, metallic chambers containing an electromagnetic field. Charged particles injected into this field receive an electrical impulse that accelerates them. For HiLumiLHC a new type of radiofrequency crab cavity has been developed which is able to rotate or “crab” the packets of particles, called bunches. The “crabbing" helps increase the bunch overlap and so the probability of collisions in the accelerator.
The first two Pre-Series Double Quarter Wave (DQW) crab cavities fabricated by RI Research Instruments now passed the cold RF testing at CERN. This gives a green light for the fabrication of the remaining six DQW crab cavities by RI.
