Insertion Devices

Our expertise in insertion devices includes the design, manufacture and installation of undulators, wigglers and phase shifters either as one-off or serial production. These devices can be pure permanent magnet (PPM), hybrid, Halbach or APPLE type units. Drawing on our extensive in-house expertise in UHV and cryogenic components, we also specialize in-vacuum devices at RT or cryogenically cooled.

Pure Permanent Magnets (PPM) and Hybrid Undulators and Wigglers

The RI photon instrumentation group designs, manufactures and delivers high-engineered pure permanent magnet and hybrid undulators and wigglers for installation in storage rings at 3rd and 4th generation synchrotron facilities worldwide.

In-Vacuum Undulators

Current 3rd and 4th generation sources require small-gap, short period-length in-vacuum undulators in order to produce high brilliance x-rays at higher energies. This has increased the demand for in-vacuum undulators (IVUs). The manufacture of IVUs, both at room and cryogenic temperatures is perfectly suited to the expertise of RI photon instrumentation combining our knowledge in undulator, UHV, cryogenicsand high precision mechanic technologies.

Magnetic Measuring Systems

Measuring benches for the magnetic characterization of insertion device incorporate a Hall probe and Flip Coil granite test stand with control hardware and data acquisition software. The full system comprises also of a flip coil dedicated for precise measurements of the field integrals and integrated multipole contents of the magnetic field. The repeatability of the system is 2 G-cm. A stretch wire system can also be optionally implemented. The integrated control system of the measuring bench enables an automated characterization of

  • the 1st and 2nd longitudinal and transversal field integrals

  • angle, trajectory and phase error characteristics of the assembled
    insertion device

  • local and global precise field mapping along any line within the aperture
    of the insertion device under test as well as the field roll-off evaluation

  • laser-calibrated online correction of displacement read-outs during
    all scanning processes
